What the?

It doesn't seem possible to me that it has been getting on for three months since I last posted. Don't get me wrong, it is quite possible that I could let things lapse for that long, I am intrinsically quite slack, but it just doesn't seem so long ago. Is that linked to age? You know, when you are a kid, everything takes F*O*R*E*V*E*R, but as we age, time seems to move in F*A*S*T*F*O*R*W*A*R*D mode. In fact I thought I was doing quite well. I knew a busy period was coming, but then it got busier, which meant that works of interest to my blogging friends got put aside, in fact my creative output slowed to zero. And then life got busier still. A conference in New Zealand was quickly followed by a meeting in Malaysia (in the few days before Christmas). This all on top of two visits from collaborators, and my normal job of course. On the family front, my lovely daughter's 16th birthday and Christmas at my house. A visit from MOTH'S sister and husband (who live in the UK) as their mum moved into a nursing home. And oh yes, many new projects at work and plans for 2012. In between Christmas and New Year saw various happy social functions, and then after the New Year, the family crew headed off to WA for a few days R&R. Then there wass my darling boy's 20th birthday, a trip to Sydneywith at least two more coming in the next couple of weeks. What am I? A FLIGHT ATTENDANT/EVENTS COORDINATOR? Far out man!

Not that any of these things are onerous in themselves, I adore my crew, love to socialise and even though I may complain endlessly about the full-on-ness of my job, I actually like it and as my dear sister Meghan reminded me, at least I am doing something of value and making a difference. Nevertheless it has been a fully hectic period and I fear that I have lost the ability to switch off and slow down.

In a moment of deep darkness, I thought "Wouldn't it be good to be able to see into the future?", you know, like reading the last few pages of a novel so you can find out what's going to happen. So I decided to approach this scientifically; yes, I consulted my horoscope!

So while other star signs contemplated a year full of romantic fulfillment, prosperity, good health and happiness, here is what I can look forward to:

Sorry, how can I work like a dog when I'm in FOETAL POSITION!???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far the horoscope is delivering on its "work like a dog" prediction. I expect similar action from the "reap the rewards" part, otherwise I will be asking for a refund on 2012!

It goes without saying then, that I have nothing beautiful to show, except for the two buddies at the top, taken on Christmas morning.

There should be an SSS post going up shortly, since we had our first Saturday meeting for the year yesterday. It was so inspiring to the girls, we had a lovely day, thanks Meghan, I don't know what I would do without you all.

So belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. I have been sustained by your inspiration and beautiful works, I truly appreciate your talents and your willingness to share.

Not sure what my goals are for the year. A combination of new and old might be just the ticket.

And oh, if you have a look in the latest Quiltmania (no 87) you might see some people you know!

Some BOM updates

A slow week for sewing since I had many evening commitments and a trip to Sydney called at short notice. I did manage to "complete" the second block of Funky Feathers.....well the birds are still eyeless and I have yet to decide if I will add the animals that sit at the bottom of the urn.

The other project I'm working on, Sue Spargo's BOM, is still giving me great pleasure. Here is Block 5 ready for embellishing.

At this time of the year I start to think about what I would like to finish by the end of the year. This year although my list may be long, I think I will end up with a big fat zero! Oh well the best apart about plans is that they can easily be changed. Maybe my finish list for next year will be LONG.

A Bad Case of Spargosis!

I think this is the correct term for this addiction. I tell you, once you get going you just can't stop. Here is Block 4 all done.

And a close up of the centre detail. Such fun.

I have also made some progress on Block 2 of Funky Feathers. I'm not quite sure why the pansy is bigger than the bird. But hey, this isn't reality right?

Now today I made a BIG mistake. I thought maybe, perhaps I could clean up my sewing room a bit - WRONG - too much stuff to do anything with really so I just made much more mess. Oh Dear. But I did find this old quilt.

Pretty isn't it? I made this top in 2000, can you believe it, when I spent the year in Sydney. I took a class with Brigitte Giblin, and used only little bits and pieces that I had with me (most of my stash had been left in Melbourne) and a few more pieces that I bought there. Needless to say it has been languishing in the cupboard since then, so time to get it quilted.

All the little blocks are hand pieced or appliqued. I put it together by machine. I thought it was so hard back then but it looks very simple to me now.

I was looking for some other old projects but couldn't find them - they must be here somewhere! Perhaps they have disintegrated! Might need to do some serious digging.

My Recent Jaunt

to Sydney gave me an opportunity to visit Material Obsession for the first time. The store has a fantastic collection of fabrics in many different styles. I'm sure anyone who visits will find something that they just can't live without!

If I had been in the "start a new project" state of mind, I would have come away with a suitcase full. But as I have so many things taking up my headspace, I opted for two purchases in kit form.

The first is a version of Amy Butler's Barcelona skirt. I haven't sewn any garments for such a long time now I was a bit nervous. But this is a very straightforward pattern, and I'm very happy with the result. I'll certainly be making more of these!

would have been a better photo if I was wearing it, but noone is here so that would be TOUGH.

The second purchase is a kit containing Kaffe fabrics to make an ottoman. This was NOD's choice and she promised me that she would helpt to make it. Needless to say it is still in the packet. Hmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder how long it will stay there?

It was a delight to meet Kathy. She is so enthusiastic and helpful, wish she was closer!

My sewing this week has been to make some more headway with the Imperial Blooms BOM and to tackle Block 2 of Funky Feathers.

Yesterday we had an SSS meeting which was absolutely delightful as always. We missed a couple of the gals including Di who is currently in Holland teaching I think. Message to Petra

That's it. Feels like some substantial progress made this week.

Now my garden needs some attention and the sun is shining. Life's tough no?

Imperial Blooms Update

A beautiful afternoon in Melbourne is much appreciated after some rather chilly days this week. Can't wait for some more warm weather. Just dropping by quickly today to show you some progress in this BOM.

I almost finished Block 2 awhile back, but ran out of threads for the bullion knots, so had to wait for some more to arrive. It's all done now!

I love the stitching on the stem and around the centre.

I have been working on this project quite a bit over the last couple of weeks. I thought I should get a reasonable amount finished before the 2012 Blocks started to arrive!

A late progress report

Hi there - Happy belated October. I have been in and out a bit the last couple of weeks, and the beginning of October has flown by.

I took these photos a two weeks ago and didn't get a chance to upload them.

The first is the first block of the funky feathers BOM. I have to put the eyes on these poor sightless birds! I decided to leave the kangaroo and emu off the bottom, I may put them on eventually, not sure.

I decided I would try to pick up the pace on the Sue Spargo BOM since I just signed up for the 2012 one.

The above photo was prestitching. Just a couple more stitches to go and it will be done!

My NOD and I have just spent a few days in Sydney at the end of school holidays. Great fun to have some one on one time with her.

Inspiration

in book form. I just love these books, two new ones that came a couple of weeks ago.

History repeated is relatively new and it is THE BEST book of pieced quilts that I have ever seen. Quite a few projects in there that I will make. If you haven't got it, trust me , you need it.

What have I been doing? Well working on block 2 of Imperial Blooms

applique done ready for embellishment.

Doing the motherly thing - a warm woolly for NOS who spends too much time out in the cold elements.

Although he is skinny as a rake he is very tall - so knitting a jumper takes a lot longer than it use to due to the length!

And finally, some more photos from the recent Quilts in the Barn.

Linda and Bev both made versions of this quilt. I just love it.

PS. On a previous post I showed some photos from a show, and wasn't sure of the makers. I was contacted by one who said this about her quilt:

It is completely hand quilted at 19stitches to the inch. It took year of work and I was absolutely thrilled to win the three ribbons. It was also a thrill to come onto your website and see you had shown it! Thank you! The red border was reverse appliqued and took F O R E V E R !

Two Quilt Events in One Day

Saturday - what a great day. Glorious early spring weather and two quilt events to go to. Can't ask for more than that!

First up let me show you my early progress on the Funky birds.

Lots of bright colours and interesting shapes. I plan to change a few things, but let's see how it goes.

I also got the next Sue Spargo BOM in the mail.

Can't believe we are already up to block 8 - and you know when I say "we" I actually don't mean me! Looks like another fun block to do.

Now - first quilt event was Essendon Quilters Quilt-in. One of our Sisters, Kerry, is past president of the Essendon group so I went along for the day. I have to say it was a wonderful day. Everyone was very friendly and made me feel very welcome. A lovely morning tea spread too! Guest speaker was Susan Smith of Patchwork on Stoneleigh, now sadly closed. She had so many beautiful quilts to show. I took some photos but was on an angle so you don't get the full frontal.

It sure was a nice visit.

After lunch I headed off to Quilts in the Barn, to meet the lovely Jo Morton. The Barn looked splendid as always, with many of Jo's quilts on display. These were supplemented by quilts made by Linda and her friend Bev. Gorgeous use of fabrics - a real treat.

The colours Jo uses are beautiful and rich, the designs very geometric.

Six out of nine ain't bad!

Well finally some progress to show you on Sallie Ann.

I have finally finished 6 of the 9 panels and joined them together. Because the applique design is continuous, some of the pieces are applied after joining. This takes longer than you would think, since there is quite a bit of bulk to hold whilst stitching. Anyway, here she is.

I'm really happy with the way it's going, but have decided to put it, not quite on the backburner, but slightly off the boil.

So what will I be working on? Well chipping away at a few things. Thing One will be the Sue Spargo BOM. Block 7 arrived a couple of weeks ago.

It is really fun to work on. Of course I'm still only up to Block 2 so I would like to catch up a bit.

Kate over at Empty Field inspired my choice of Thing Two. Kate calls this Mad Little Birds

but it's actual name is Come Fly With Me. I think I'm going to call it Funky Feathered Friends. It is a BOM available through Material Obsession. It is gorgeous and bright - just right for chasing the last of Melbourne's gloomy winter away.

Quilt show part 2

When we visited Linda's event to meet Mary, there was also some show and tell!

I think this is Bev's version of Mary Mannakee - isn't it gorgeous?

I love this one for its very unusual setting.

Hello Dear Friends

I have been taking some photos to show you but haven't had a chance to upload them. So this will be a bit of the past and a bit of the present.

You may recall that a few weeks ago, some visitors from the northern hemisphere were in town. By now you have probably heard many of the stories, but I have a few photos to share.

Mary and Joe Koval were in town, and Linda (from Quilts in the Barn) hosted an evening with Mary. It was absolutely delightful. Linda is a fabulous hostess, and invited her quilting friends from various different places. I enjoyed the evening immensely. Mary is so knowledgeable and interesting o talk to. And of course being able to touch these antique quilts was amazing. Remember we don't get to see so many of these here in Australia.

Here are some photos of Mary with some beautiful antique quilts.

One of our favourites, and certainly one to pay homage to.

This was my favourite, the fabrics are gorgeous and it was in such good nick.

Starting to delve into the red and green quilts.

This could be the answer to "How long is a piece of string" but I don't think it was!

We were happy to hear that Mary was very impressed with the standard of our Aussie quilts. In particular that we spent a long time making intricate pieces.

Yesterday we had a quilt show in Melbourne and I was impressed by quite a few quilts. Here are some, more will follow.

This first one is by our friend and machine quilter extrordinaire, Helen Hayes.

Each hexagon centre is made from an old embroidered doily which Helen collected from family, friends and op shops. Looked fabuous.

Not sure who all of these quilts were made by, but their makes are certainly to be congratulated.

This Baltimore is a beauty. Love the border.

Burn Notice

A long semester over and I never want one like that again. This past week has seen work and home return to normal and I am starting to feel a little rejuvenated and I am regaining some energy to think about what I would *like* to do rather than what I *have* to do or *haven't* yet done.

So these photos are a little old now - I took them a few weeks ago but didn't get a chance to upload.

First one is of my completed Block 1 of Imperial Blooms.

It turned out much better than I anticipated and the stitchery was great fun. Here's a close up.

So pretty. I have started Block 2 but nothing too exciting yet.

I also finished Block 5 of Sallie Ann - here it is so you can see the design coming together.

You can see the oval wreath forming. Can't wait to get that sixth panel in!

We had some very special visitors last week, Petra and Nel from Den Haan & Wagenmakers, Carol and Ghys from Quiltmania and Mary and Joe Koval the very well known antique quilt and fabric experts - it's true - can you believe it? More on that next time.

I'm off to have a Harry Potter marathon in preparation for the final movie - tragic I know - but so much fun.

The Best Laid Plans

often go astray don't they? My tale of woe involves the upcoming long weekend and my plans for spending it in the garden. You see I haven't had that much time lately, and my garden needs a bit of TLC. Topped off with the fact that I have just had some new garden beds dug out, the weather looked fabulous (probably for the last time until the Spring arrives) and I had some herbs looking for a home. So mid morning Saturday, dressed in my gardening gear I head out to make a start and BAM! CRUNCH! OOOOOOUUUUUCHHHHH! and down I went like the proverbial sack of spuds. Such a small divet, such a loud series of grinding crunches, and a spectacular swan dive into the grass.

Luckily the ankle (or is that a cankle) isn't broken, just badly sprained. Blew up into a black and blue, swollen blanc mangey type affair, that has had me hobbling around like a complete geriatric with a side helping of idiot. But mostly, reclining on the couch with said cankle elevated. Have a WAH!! how much self pity can you stand?

Well I was sure grumpy at my thwarted plans and lack of fresh air and exercise that I am deeply craving. What's a girl to do?? But wait....what's that you say? There are 105 UFO"S in your sewing room... so there are...why don't I do some sewing!!????!!! And of course that's what I did..as much as I could since I can't stand much and I can't get up and down off the ground much. It's amazing how much of that you actually do when you're sewing isn't it?

So to the output. I decided to spend some time with Sue Spargo.

This one has been waiting for some quiet time so I could get going. And I have to say I am enjoying it more and more. I now know how to do coral stitch and couching. And the threads are beautiful, silk, seagrass and lovely hand dyed cottons.

I also spent some time putting the next border on Phebe - here is a bit.

Doesn't look like much progress I know, but believe me there is quite a bit of work in the dogtooth border.

I am just appliqueing over the joins in the next Sallie Ann piece. Five panels now done, only four to go.

And oh yes - a little retail therapy.

This is a fat quarter pack of Grace form 3 sisters. I plan to make this with it. The colous are so gorgeous. I think I may need to buy some yardage too.

Perfect NO? This is a pattern from McCalls magazine. I do love a Christmas quilt.

So as you see, not a completely wasted long weekend, and I guess the gardening can wait.

Let there be light

at the end of the tunnel! Boy has it been a long and tiring semester. But it's almost over (if you count 980 exam scripts to assess as almost over) an then I will have some head space.

In the meantime, I have been going very slowly, with a slight meandering into the knitting territory as it has been quite cold here.

Thanks to all those who gave me words of support for my Sue Spargo piece. I haven't been able to answer your emails, but I have read and taken them on board so much that I have not pulled it out and statred again.

So - this week the next installment of the BOM arrived

isn't it gorgeous? I'm really starting to chomp at the bit on this one. It is quite fun. I've done a little more on Block one. Not much, but the embroidery is FUN.

And I have been working on my lollipop trees. Block 3 finished

and Block 4 ready to go

I love the colours in this one. I do have a passion for red!

Advice needed please!

Hello dear friends. Just popping in to show you some progress on my Imperial Blooms (Sue Spargo) BOM - I know some of you are keen to see it.

I have completed the applique section and ready to tackle the embroidery. Not quite sure how that will go - not much of an embroiderer actually.

It's easy to do the wool applique since no turning is required - but I'm not sure if I'm doing it well/correctly. Here is a close up.

Does that look OK to you who may be quite experienced at this? Because the needle is thick and the threads in the fabric are to, sometimes the stitching almost frays the edges (does that make sense?) and it looks a bit rough to me. I'm hoping that the embroidery will disguise that a bit.

Any advice will be appreciated. Hope all is well with y'all.

Missing!

Well almost. Have been in and out so much lately I have barely had enough time to pick up a needle. But since it is the last day in April, I thought I would drop in and say hello just for fun.

We have just returned from 7 days at Byron Bay - took the whole family up to Bluesfest (a five day music festival). This was my first time and I have to tell you it won't be my last! It was a musical delight, made better by seeing some acts I didn't know who turned out to be stunning!

I confess to being a Bob Dylan disciple - have been for nearly all my life, so seeing him was amazing (not the first time for me but it was for my kids), Elvis Costello who I also love was great too. But it was the others like Mavis Staples and Buffy St.Marie who you would have to say are no spring chickens, that blew me away. I also heard some Aussie talent - Wolfmother (I love them too), Washington was good and the RocKwiz live show all made the event really enjoyable.

And I send out my Congrats to the organisers - an extremely well run festival in terms of catering, facilities etc. It was fabulous!

Of course I took plenty of sewing to do - but wasn't at the cabin for many minutes, so did none!

What I can show you is my second completed block for Kim's Lollipop trees.

I'm well into the third block now - will show you shortly. It's so relaxing to sew - really enjoying it.

And block 4 of Imperial Blooms arrived

It will be so much fun when I really get going on it - but it' not happening now.

Not much else to tell for now, but a couple of things are in the air. More on that later.

Very jealous

of those of you who were able to attend the exhibition of red and white quilts - it appeared to be absolutely amazing. Thank you to all those who posted photos. It was very much appreciated.

I am looking forward to attending one of our large annual quilt shows next weekend. Although not as spectacular as the red and white exhibiton, it is usually very enjoyable and inspiring.

In fact, last year one of my favourite quilts was a version of the Wickersham quilt. To my amazement, the lovely Sue-Anne from Buddy & Me remembered that I was after the book when she found out that one had become available! So thanks Sue-Anne. I am now the proud owner of

This quilt is a project which is now towards the top of the list!

Still working away at my current projects. Nearly done with Block 2 of Lollipop trees

and enjoying it. It is easy sewing and the colours are pure happiness.

I wasn't going to post about Sallie Ann until I'd finished panel 4 - but it's so close I couldn't resist

You can really see the curve starting to - well - curve. I'm going to have a short break from it now to finish aforementioned lollipop block 2.

I saw a documentary this week

where the claim was made that a messy workspace is the sign of a creative mind. I offer this photo as evidence that I have a very creative mind.

My office at work is actually just as bad! It's amazing that I can find anything but actually I can do it better than if I tidy up. So this is now going to be by mantra when anyone comments on my apparent shambolic existence - I have a very creative mind!

The last few weeks I have been working exclusively on Sallie Ann - trying to finish the first corner block. Nearly there

I really love the way it's coming together. It's a soft and pretty piece and surprisingly relaxing to work on, since all the colour choices are made in the centre.

As a consequence my Imperial blooms project hasn't developed much. The third month's materials arrived, but I haven't even finished month one.

I'm sure I will get into it when the weather cools off. A bit humid in Melbourne to be handling wool.

Oh - and some inspiration. You may have already seen this book in blogland

so many gorgeous vintage style crochet projects suitable for teenage girls and their middle aged mothers.

Movie Review: Me and my girl went to see "Griff the Invisible" last night. I'm not sure you will be able to find it if you live outside of Australia, but if you can it is well worth it. It is very quirky, original, Australian humour, about a couple of 20 somethings who live in their own make believe worlds. Great acting and production and a lovely message about accepting people for who they are. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tomorrow I'm off to the footy with my boy, and Monday I am videoing some of the band's last night at the Evelyn where they have been playing for quite some time. So not much sewing will be happening.

trying to finish the third panel, but it's busy time here so not much head space for sewing. Hopefully I will finish it this week so i can move to a corner block which will be a bit more interesting to sew.

Happiness is

the return of the prodigal son. We had a slightly nervous wait at the airport. The plane was delayed for over an hour due to thunderstorms right over the airport, at the tail end of cyclone Yasi. I can't tell you what a great feeling it was when Louis finally ran through the customs door. Here he is with his new love

He is even making some reasonable sounds with it - can play some Beatles (Ravi Shankar period) songs. We have had a fabulous weekend listening to stories of his adventures and impressions of life in a country very different to his own. He had a fabulous time but is also very happy to be home. Managed to get some sewing in - here is panel two of Sallie Ann finished.

The next panel is exactly the same - so I don't know what I'm going to show you while I finish it. Will have to raid my UFO stash!

Also the post arrived with the first installment of the new Sue Spargo BOM.

It's very beautiful. I have been wanting to try something of hers for awhile now, bot I'm not really an embellisher, so this will be a challenge. Haven't started yet because I forgot to order the wool thread.

You know I'm a sucker

for a beautiful background. The colour and movement of a fabric can send my mind sailing away into new dimensions, whether it be for a quilt that is on my to do list or if not that, perhaps to a quilt I've seen and would like to replicate.

As evidence I present Exhibit 1: Phebe

I love the fabric in the background. At first I thought it would be too strong - it is not a tone on tone, but a definite design. It adds such depth to the quilt. As you can see I've been pedal to the metal on the next border. It was my goal for the summer to get to this point so I'm happy! Back to the next dogtooth, say farewell to Phebe, it might be some time before you see her again.

Exhibit number 2 is the background on Sallie Ann

An allover print in tan and softest lemon. It's a gorgeous fabric and gives the whole piece a warm glow. It is beautiful with my favourite yellow greens. The original Sallie Ann used this fabric too - hey, why tamper with perfection? Maybe I should call mine "Homage to, Homage to Sallie Ann"! Or maybe not! I loved this fabric so much I also used it as the backing for my "Blue Collection" quilt.

Panel two above is, so close to being done. I changed my mind on the green fabric for some of the leaves, so waiting for the new one to arrive has slowed me down a little - and it is a PILL to sew with. Thick threads that won't stay put - don't look too closely at the sewing - it is awful.

Exhibit 3 is the background for Lollipop Trees.

Kim's quilt is a riot of amazing colour with her quirky shapes and Kaffe Fassett's amazing fabrics. I loved this design which was originally on pastel backgrounds, but I wanted something stronger. I found the chocolate aboriginal dots and knew it was worth a shot.

Here is block number one complete. I'm really happy with the way the clear colours pop off this background. Block number two is ready to go

The fuchsias and oranges look great I think. I'm going to call mine "Chocolate coated lollipops"
just for fun.

OK, OK, so by now you're thinking this is just Deb's way of showing us what she's been up to. Well true, but it is also because I want to introduce you to my new love

Exhibit 4: Luna Notte of the pear variety. Sadly it refuses to be photographed in all its glory. It is actually a grey-green rather than a grey - but look at all that texture. I saw it as a pre-release on line and loved it, but then I tried to behave and not buy any. Then a few of my SSS's decided to use it. Merri is doing a beautiful Princess Feather, Julie is using it for DNQTTT and Meghan is going to buy some. Well it looked so good I knew I would regret it if I didn't buy 9 yds, so I did. Now I am regret free and that's a good thing. But what shall I do with it? Good question. But the good answer might be for next time.

I can't believe

it's the 18th of January and it's my first post for the year! Where did all the holidays go? Why am I back at work? Feels like I've never been away.

I hope your year has started off well. Mine has been nice and relaxing, low key, just what I craved after a hectic year of traveling. I grabbed any minute I could to sew and have made some progress - but it doesn't seem much in the photos.

First up - Sallie Ann. The second panel is whizzing along - maybe I will have this done in a year (I'm not making any promises)!! I think that's fast for a large applique quilt.

I've spent some time cutting and machining the little Phebe borders. I'm sewing the dogtooth on freezer paper - takes so long but the finish is worth it I think.

On the back burner is the Lollypop trees - a little progress - not much.

I chose a lighter brown than I had originally intended so it didn't get lost on the background. I think it works OK.

There are so many fabulous projects around in blogland at the moment - I'm trying to avoid the temptation but a couple are really attracting my attention.

One is the Barbara B. Snyder quilt. How great is that? And Barbara Brackman also has a series of free patterns commemorating the Civil War 150th anniversary.

I have signed up for the new Sue Spargo BOM - so that should be enough to keep me busy and take me out of my comfort zone for the year. Are you choosing a project for this year to challenge yourself? If so I'd love to hear about it.

Had a great day with the Sisters on Saturday; my first for a couple of months since I missed the December meeting. It was so great to catch up with the gals - so productive and the conversation is always I*N*T*E*R*E*S*T*I*N*G!! Hopefully there will be an SSS blog soon.

I will finish with a few snaps of my recent road trip with my DD. I enjoyed spending some one on one time with her - she's a great companion - we should do it more often.

Happy New Year!!

Very happy New Year to you all!! Some of you (us) will be H*O*T, some of you will be C*O*L*D and some of you will be W*E*T!! But whatever your climate I hope you have an enjoyable New Year's Eve.

And of course, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. Our smaller than normal family spent Christmas Day with my BFFL Claire and her extended family at her sister's place. Claire and I met at school when we were 13 - you could call this a long term relationship! I love her dearly and spending the day with her crew took me back to many hours spent at her house when we were teenagers. We had a great day. Here's Claire (right) and her sister Mary.

And here is my NOD pretending to be an elf. She's the one on the left.

Boxing Day was spent with my family. I made a cake which turned out (alarmingly) to be Barbie Pink.

Not good for the waistline, but it was delicious.

Since the Christmas festivities have been over, I have been pootling around trying to restore order to the chaos that a busy year leaves behind. This requires some major work trying to clear my bookshelf of old stuff to make way for the recently acquired new stuff. So I have been flicking through old quilting mags - throwing out any that I don't need anymore - boy have I generated some recycling! It's quite funny to go back 15 years to see what was cool in quilting......in Australia it was naive and country style. Even the sewing machines in the ads look ancient.

Have been chipping away at some sewing projects. The borders for Phebe are taking some time at the machine. No progress worthy of viewing right now. My first Lollypop tree block is nearly done. A couple more circles and the stems to go.

It's a riot of colour and so easy to stitch. Just right for the hot weather over summer.

And finally, finally I have finished the centre of Sallie Ann.

I wasn't happy with a couple of fabric choices, so pulled them out and replaced them. I'm much happier now, it would have bugged me forever. And just because I like new beginnings - here is the next block ready to go.

True it's not a new project, but it still feels like a start.

Well nothing you haven't seen before in part - so just because I love you all sooooooo much, I pulled out a UFO to show you.

Started about 1999 and very quick to do. Everything is hand done - even the backgrounds are handpieced. I moved to Sydney about this point and much of my stuff went into storage for a year or so. Once I came back I'd sort of lost momentum so it has languished. It has a very simple floral border partially completed. Very festive isn't it? So my one and only NY's resolution is to get it finished by Christmas 2011. Now if you don't see it as a WIP in the not too distant future, you have my permission to nag me - because I will get distracted.

On that note, a glass of bubbly is calling my name. I shall drink to the health of friends near and far away, including my lovely boy who I am missing dreadfully, but is having a great time in India.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I know it's a bit early - but at the rate I'm posting, I may not be back before Easter.

So many things have been happening since my last post, not many of them are big important things. Just a collection of the day to day highs and lows that keep a working mum busy - too busy.

Let me fill you in on the highlights.

First piece of really good news is that NOS auditioned for music programs and was accepted. I can't tell you how thrilled he was - he was a changed man overnight - I could see how it had been weighing on him all year. It is very difficult to get into a program. They audition around 90-100 guitarists of all ages and levels of experience, and take about 4, so it is a great achievement. Second piece of news, he has now departed on a trip OS with friends, he has been to Malaysia and now should be somewhere in India. Won't be back until early Feb. I can tell you it was so hard to watch him go.........and since he will be gone for the holidays the entire household is a little sad.

My lovely NOD finished up a great year at school and is now social butterflying. She is so gorgeous to have around - especially now that she has adjusted to braces and isn't in quite so much pain. We are planning a week away together, just the girls, hopefully getting up to a bit of mischief on the way.

Remember this time last year when I had terrible car trouble? Well it all started to happen again - but this time my "I've had enough" switch got flicked and I had sold the old car and bought another within a couple of days. Haven't taken a photo yet. It's a swish black VW Jetta avec sunroof. NOD and I will be tres chic cruising up the highway I can tell you (even if we are the only ones who think so!).

Since my last post I have been back up to Sydney twice (unexpected trips) and back to Malaysia, so I have been really busy. So busy I missed the SSS Christmas party - really not happy about that! I vow to not go near an airport for some time. It's been a busy year.

On the sewing front, haven't had much time or headspace. To be honest something just had to take a backseat - I'm hoping to regain some energy and motivation over the next few weeks. I've even taken leave on Christmas Eve (first time in about 10 years I think).

So that's enough of that. I have a couple of photos. First Sallie Ann. I should have been finished this centre a month ago - but hey - can only do so many things before the brain starts to fry.

It's a little bit pink at the moment, but there is more red and less pink around the outside so I think it will balance out. Can't wait to move on to the next bit.

Only other sewing I have done is to start on this Kim McLean design.

I bought the brown background ages ago (when the pattern was first available) and a starter pack of fabric. I cut and basted a large amount of the blocks and then promptly forgot about it and started something else. But the Glorious Applique blog inspired me to pull it out, and I'm enjoying the contrast of colours and shapes.

Well that's me done. Hope to be back soon with these two blocks finished. Until then I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season surrounded by your loved ones.

Something different

You know how it is when you are trying to find just the right piece of fabric, and you know that you have it and you just can't find it anywhere. So you look three times in every plastic tub you own, rummaging through bits and pieces, stacking and unstacking crates - and you still can't find it, and it has to be somewhere, so you do it again, sleep on it , give up, decide you'll have to buy something else but you can't find what you want because that bit you thought you had was just so perfect, so you have one last search, and it isn't there and in frustration you give up, turn around , open a cupboard - and wham - there it is! Is it magic, punishment, or something else that I just don't have a word for?

Well while I was going through the above, I also found this.

Forgot I had it pretty much, but while it was out I thought I'd take a photo for you Kathie, because it's on a plain background - sure it is quite a strong yellow, but plain nevertheless. It is the centre of the Trundle Quilt (a pattern by Karen Cunningham) which I started the year I was in Sydney (2000). It has been brewing and at just the right time it will be ready to come out again to be finished.

In the meantime, I have just been continuing on with Sallie Ann, I'm a little bit further on now from when the photo was taken.

I'm enjoying it very much - except now I'm coming to a few fabric decisions that I know will cause me to faff around for some time.

Thanks for all your comments about starting and finishing. It seems like everybody prefers to start things rather than finish, but also appreciate the satisfaction of finishing a major piece of work. Me too, I'm glad we all think so much alike!

Thanks so much to all of you who have made comments about my quilt DNQTTT (either my version or the others). It means a lot to me since this is my first attempt at designing. It is not currently available as a pattern, since as you know I am a full time+ worker and mum, and it takes time to produce a pattern, and I don't have much of that. But if I do decide to do it (and it is possible) I will certainly let you know here first.

Here is my slightly crooked picture of it in situ. It was actually made for that spot and it really looks good there. It doesn't photograph well though. The stripeyness of the background is much more pronounced in photos, it's more subtle in real life (see I'm not telling the truth again - there isn't anything subtle about this quilt at all). And oh yes - I'm thinking about doing another more traditional version (telling the truth or not?). But perhaps not this year.

Oh and if you haven't seen the photos of Quilts in the Barn, do have a look here where Linda has got a fabulous virtual quilt show in progress. And if you decide to make a contribution to breast cancer research do let her know, so she can add it to the tally. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Not much to tell you - just popping in to say hi and show you the beginnings of Sallie Ann.

It's coming together very quickly - doesn't happen very often does it? Actually I have done quite a bit more than this now - show you next time.

Last day of semester tomorrow, have written my revision lecture, and I'm ready to de-stress. Yahoo!

In the meantime - apologies for not replying to your emails of late. I have spent so much time at the computer I have an aversion to even opening the mail, but I do appreciate all of your very kind comments and hope to get back to you soon.

Sallie Ann and Phebe

Isn't it exciting starting a new project? I just love it. I have started on the centre panel for Sallie Ann - but before I show it to you, I will show you my progress on Phebe.

I decided to put the pieces that I have finished together to see how it was going and also to tidy up a bit. I have *almost* finished putting together the bottom border and have most of the stars done for the top. I am pleased with how it's coming together.

Now Sallie Ann. First I need a background. This one is a pale yellow and tan. I already have the backing which came from the same range (it has been in my stash for many years).

Then add some greens. Mine are yellow greens which I love - some of them are old some not.

Then add some pinks/reds/cheddars.

OK - I need a pattern - I use a plastic overlay rather than mark the fabric (except for the stems which I do mark).

Sorry - couldn't get far enough away to get a shot of the entire piece.

And now to sew on the stems

AAAAAhhhhhhhhh..............I love starting and luckily I am becoming quite attached to finishing.

Which do you prefer - starting or finishing?

I'm Baaa....aaack

and it's great to be home! I do like to travel - but I also like to be here! Of course it has been a bit hectic with the upcoming show - but all the quilts that have been "on the go" are now "gone" and I have spent a couple of hours tidying up the mess that has been left. Seems a bit emptier now - but in a good way.

Most of the quilts were delivered to Linda this afternoon, with Merri, Clare and Kerry delivering theirs over the next few days. There was quite a pile when I left. Linda's property is truly gorgeous, we had a look around the "barn" and thought about how many quilts we would be able to hang. It's very exciting - I can't wait. Thank you so much Linda for inviting us this year.

If you would like the details of the show they are here and here. We would all (the SSS and Linda and what sounds like an amazing team of friends) love to see you there - did I say how much I'm looking forward to it and how excited I am? I did? Oh.

For our international friends, I'm afraid we can't find a way to sell you raffle tickets - bummer - but I'm winning the raffle quilt anyway - what can I tell you. I will try to remember to take my camera and get some photos of the quilts.

For my part - I'm contributing only three quilts - DNQTTT, Blue and Pennsylvania. I had grand plans, but time got the better of me. But there are soooooo many other beautiful quilts I'm not too sad. I picked up Pennsylvania last weekend - this one was beautifully quilted by Katrina of Katrina's Quilting. I'm really happy with the way this quilt has come together. A few pics for you.

It's been a good year for finishes. But my fingers are itching to start some new things and I've spent the week fantasizing about what I should do next. Had a few things kicking around in my head. The new website "Glorious Applique" has been getting my attention, but I was also wanting to do something traditional. So I have decided to do both! When Kim McLean's Lollipop trees pattern first came out a few years ago - I just loved it. Bought the pattern and kit from Glorious Color, and decided to use a chocolate background (yes chocolate covered lollipops!). I prepared most of the big blocks and then got distracted - so it has been waiting for me for a couple of years. And then the temptress Di, said she was going to do a new version of an old favourite - "why don't you join me?" Well how could I say no? I couldn't, so Homage to Sallie Ann will be my repro fix. Di helped me choose some beautiful fabrics today - so I'm off and running on these two little (ahem) projects. Oh and Phebe I'm planning to finish by end of 2010. No pressure though.

So sat tuned for some photos of these new projects over the next weeks and months, probably with a little bit of old stuff thrown in for good measure.

Oh yes - travel stories. Well it was hard work (10-12 hour work days) but also enjoyable. Rather than fill up the blog with photos, I have put them on flickr for those who would like to see. A short progress report

Battling off a nasty virus for the last week or so - everyone on Melbourne seems to have had it - means that my energy levels haven't been great. I'm *almost* ready to start complaining about the cold weather and rain, but hey, you gotta love the fact that the drought seems to have broken.

And besides - I'm leaving on a jet plane next Friday to the sunny side of the world. Barcelona here I come, oh and La Manga ......oh and yes a weekend in Paris on the way. Now don't feel sorry for me - I know it's tough - but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.

If you have any addresses for your favourite patchwork or needlework shop in any of these places - do tell! I will have time to visit. And I should say - this is all WORK not holiday (at least that's my story).

So - what have you been up to? Fabulous projects I have seen while dropping in silently to your blogs. Fantastic creativity and inspiring work - I'm itching to start something new. But I'm still showing discipline!

We have another machine quilter (other than Helen) who we send work from our group to - Katrina. Merri had a quilt booked in but then realised that she didn't have a backing! So being an opportunist - I jumped straight in - Merri was kind enough to offer her spot to me and we delivered Pennsylvania to Katrina last week. Of course I hadn't quite finished it when the offer came up so a few candles were burned getting it ready. Of course that means I ran out of the house without taking a photo! Sorry........ hopeless I know. Here are the last photos of it I have.

Apart from that I'm just pottering around. Trying to attach the binding to DNQTTT - it's big and heavy so this is a big job. And I've gone back to GTASB to piece together the blocks. Here are the final blocks for the project.

Back to Pennsylvania

Remember back here that I posted about the beautiful Pennsylvania Applique quilt? Well of course I put the quilt down to work on Phebe exclusively and progress ceased for awhile. But last week I came to the conclusion that I wasn't going to be able to finish Phebe for the exhibition, but I might just be able to finish Pennsylvania, so I have been working on it and it's nearly finished.

Here is a photo from my design floor.

All the cutting is done, this is the triangle border ready to assemble. Apart from that - a small amount of applique to complete and that's it. Stay tuned next weekend when I'm hoping to show the quilt top.

Phebe is not too far away from being finished. A couple of the star borders are done - here's one.

I'll get back to it shortly, but I wasn't enjoying the pressure of trying to finish it quickly.

Now I know it's been a long time since I posted, but I have posted over at SSS. If you haven't been over there, nip over and see what the gang has been up to. Since I had my Morrell quilt out, I thought I would take a few more photos for you.

These two are hand pieced and then appliqued to the background. The pieces in the star are tiny!!

Weather in Melbourne has been cold and wet so not really good for gardening. But mine seems to be doing it's own thing.

A pretty bunch of daffs and irises.

The irises have been in my garden for years, but weren't flowering, so in an effort to save them, I dug them all up and replanted them. They have multiplied vigorously and some of them have been flowering - a beautiful deep purple. I'm hoping they will all flower here.

Last but not least - I'm sure many of you will have seen a photo of Corliss's (from Threadbear) new quilt - her stunning version of the English Basket Quilt - but for those of you who haven't, here it is.

It's definitely on my list to start this year. Isn't it fabulous?

Over the border!

Well nearly but I couldn't wait any longer to show you how it was coming on. The four applique borders are now attached and I am working at the corners - there are applique pieces that go over the mitre. Since I took the photo, I have completed the top two corners and now just have the bottom to do, so hopefully by the weekend it should be done. I have also finished 3/4 of the next pink dogtooth borders, so things should move along quickly - fingers crossed.

It's not often that I'm this focussed. Having a deadline, and the blog has helped me stay on track.But now my mind has started to wander on to the next applique project, since there will be no more hand sewing to do for Phebe. Do you do this too? Think about the next 10 projects before you have finished the current one? I can't help myself - need to keep looking forward. So many things out there to tempt me - and then some ideas of my own. Who knows...................

Anyway - just a quick post for today to show you Phebe. We are up to the lovely Sue's this weekend for SSS. I do love going to Sue's - she really spoils us - she is such a great cook and generous person. I have a special Morrell quilt edition planned for the SSS blog - and we will be taking some photos this Saturday, so stay tuned over there next week.

you are truly amazing and every time I look at my quilt I am in awe.

What am I talking about you say? Well yesterday I picked up my DNQTTT quilt from Helen Hayes of Noah's quilting. The quilt is large and I'm sure that Helen spent many many long hours on her feet working on this quilt. I think she said she used nearly 5,000 metres (maybe yards?) of thread. Helen's work is absolutely stunning and I couldn't be happier. This quilt is special to me, since it is my first "original" design - which means I reproduced an old quilt all by myself!

Unfortunately though, it's very hard to photograph because we chose the thread to match the background so closely. Nevertheless, I have a few photos, and when it is on the wall I will try to get some more. It's so big (90 x 108 inches approx.) that I can't get a good whole quilt photo.

Anyway, here it is - what do you think?

I have had a very "take it easy" kind of weekend. To be honest - traveling knocks me around, and after this busy couple of weeks I was aching. Ended up not taking any sewing - which was fine, since I had zero minutes to do it anyway.

So on to the last applique border for Phebe. Not sure if I will finish in time - we'll see.

I'm looking forward to spending a few quiet weeks catching up with blogging, sewing and family (not necessarily in that order).

Well hello everyone, I hope you haven't forgotten me. I am missing you heaps - so I thought I'd drop by just to tell you what's been happening. I won't say "I've been so busy" because by now you know I always am - and so many of you are the same. Trying to juggle so many things; work, family and various different interests. If only we had more time - I wish I could survive on less sleep!

It certainly has been a very busy semester one way or another. But my exam is now done and a team of markers is busy doing what a marking team does! I've also had a rather hectic out of hours life - social functions, school responsibilities, performances (my darling NOD in Alice in Wonderland - she had various roles including tweedledum. The tweedley pair were show stoppers, so funny), photo shoots for Quilts in the barn, presentations.........so all enjoyable but not much time for sewing left over. And the next couple of weeks is also busy. I will be giving some talks (I recently won a teaching award so I get to be a guest speaker as a reward - I'd prefer cash - what's going on there?) I fly to Malaysia next week for a ridiculously short amount of time, then I fly to Sydney for a couple of days at the National curriculum forum. Better pack some sewing. And I will miss my SSS meeting - DISASTER!!! Darling sisters if you're around my area or Parkville - do come for coffee - I miss you, large sob.

OK - enough of that - I suppose you want to see some pictures, do you? I'm just going to tootle around in my room and see what I can find - must be something in here to photo for you. Well I have some things - but not much of my work. I'm about half way through Phebe's third border - looks the same as the other two which you have seen. But I have also been pootling around with the twinkly little stars, which will be the next frames. I have completed 24/80 and have half completed 8 more. Lots of cutting done, so that should speed things up. Whilst cutting the 75 zillion fabrics I'm using, I noticed how many of them are Judie Rothermel fabrics. Isn't she great? How much do we owe her for her great fabric designs? Here's a photo

I have done a bit of knitting and have nearly finished my Noro jumper - a bit more of a sleeve to go is all. The yarn is quite coarse and I'm a sensitive flower so I hope I can wear it! Love the colours though.

The last delivery of GTASB arrived about a month ago - and I haven't touched it.

In fact I haven't touched the months before either. So I was in it right to the last hurdle! But I'm so intent on getting Phebe done for the show, I have dropped everything else. But soon as the applique is done I will be back in there!

And just because you've waited sooooo patiently - here are the last of my AQC photos - the Kim MacLean ones. I'm sure you've seen most of these already though. That's OK - you might like to see them again.

This is a beautiful quilt. I think Kim made another version all in Kaffe's fabrics - but I prefer this one.

A lovely floral basket quilt.

Another of my favourites and I was so gald to be able to see it in the flesh. I have a version in process (lots cut, nothing sewn) on a chocolate brown background.

This one was a surprise - I love the layout and the fabrics were gorgeous. Love the freshness of the blue and white.

I had a great time at the AQC - meeting up with Lizzie and Nat and.........I have met Lizzie on a couple of occasions now and she seems like an old friend. So enthusiastic and generous with her time. It occurred to me at the time (and again now) what a great group of women quilters are. I have e-met so many wonderful women through this blog and really met some others through quilting, it is truly amazing.

I hope to have some more progress to show you soon. I'm certainly enjoying peeking at yours. Happy days,

I've been framed

The Phebe quilt is based on a central medallion surrounded by a number of frames. While I have been appliqueing I have also been constructing some of these frames. Three of them are attached now.

I love watching the progress of quilts. The way each addition changes the look of the piece is amazing. I am well into the second applique frame, but it will be some time before it is all finished. In the meantime I will be working on the stars which make up the next two frames.

There is a definite chill in the air in Melbourne so of course I went to my wardrobe to pull out some woollies - and to be honest - some were looking a bit shabby. You know - that place "can't quite wear this to work but it's still OK for home"? So I felt the need to get out the old knitting needles. Decided on some glorious Noro Kureyon yarn. This took only a few hours,

but I have to say my hands ache after a night of knitting. Phooey to the aging process, I say!

We had an "almost" fabulous day yesterday - SSS day and it was Di's turn to be invaded by the group. It is always so wonderful to go to Di's place in the hills. She has a beautiful property, she's an amazing cook and hostess and of course I don't need to tell you about her sewing. But just after we arrived, poor Di developed a terrible migraine - and went to lie down, leaving her fabulous partner Brian to attend to us - and of course we helped ourselves to the delicious lunch that she had made. We hoped that she would reappear, but alas she didn't. Still it was great to catch up wth her for a few minutes, and the rest of the gang. Meghan looking fabulous after her trip to Europe which I'm sure she will tell you about over at SSS.

The bell is beeping on my oven so I must dash. I'll finish with some more photos from AQC as promised. A couple of traditional quilts, lovely workwomanship

Another quilt show (PART 1)

Good morning dear friends. I have been trying to get some photos of the AQC up since last weekend but alas have had no time. By now you will have probably seen many of these quilts at other sites, oh well, hopefully something new will appear here.

If you are not from Melbourne, the show is held at the old Exhibition buildings - truly beautiful building surrounded by lovely gardens. I didn't think to take a photo, but luckily Sue -Anne did - go have a look here.

I will post the photos in installments - otherwise the post will be huge. So today a few of my favourites.

My absolute favourite was a version of the Wickersham quilt. When I first saw the pattern, I didn't really like it but this version is fab! I think the sashing makes all the difference, don't you agree?

I absolutely love the clear colours in this quilt - and of course the geometry appeals to my maths brain.

The white dots are wool felt blanket stitched on - genius!

These two close ups are of quilts that were featured in Quiltmania a few months ago. I really like them - one reminds me of Christmas decorations.

I didn't think to take bigger photos sonce I already had them in the mag - sorry - thoughtless of me.

This one is a very nice reproduction of a quilt in Anette Gero's book The Fabric of Society.

A close second favourite was this one

Not your traditional quilt - quite medeaval - the background is like a brick arch. I took a close up of the machine quilting because it was like a mosaic.

So much talent out there!

Not the best photos - but the lighting was bad at the show with lots of natural light coming through the windows behind the quilts - made it hard to photograph.

I will have some more photos to show soon.

In the meantime I'm working on the second applique border for Phebe (and nothing else). A photo of the first one over at SSS.

Well hi everyone - I hope you're all well and getting some quality stitching time. After thinking about starting an MM block - I had a change of heart and decided to get going on Phebe's applique borders. Nearly finished number one so I will show you next post. In the meantime I have some photos from Essendon quilter's show for you. For our non Aussie friends - we don't have too many antique quilts, so our shows are mostly new quilts.

Hello everyone - whether or not you celebrate Easter, I hope you had a fabulous break with plenty of time to spend with family and your favourite sewing project.

Easter is the holiday I love the most - no, not because of the chocolate - but because the weather in Melbourne is so glorious at this time of the year. And also because it is a long enough break to do something without being too long. The Uni shuts Friday through Tuesday and the kids are on holidays from school. I took an extra days leave on Thursday - and made the road trip to sewing at Clare's accompanied by my darling daughter and two of her friends. It was a lively ride! We had a great day - thanks Clare, I really needed you all.

NOS took off camping with his mates - the rest of us plus another of NOD's friends took off to Apollo Bay for a few days. A lovely seaside town - very relaxing. Of course I always pack plenty of sewing when I go away - and actually do - none. When will I learn?

Nevertheless, here is a little progress to show

these are the last of the GTASB for March. The April pack arrived

and very exciting, has the making up instructions, so when I have finished these blocks I will start putting together the top and then I guess the borders will come in May. Although I have thoroughly enjoyed this project, I will be glad to finish it since I have many jobs to do before the exhibition.

I am putting the last couple of pieces on my Phebe centre - finally found the last bits of fabric to do the job - believe me I auditioned many! In the meantime I have been getting some of the other frames done - like this one

I love the pink in this. It's from Windham - called New Nation.

After this is all together I will start the applique borders. But to tell you the truth - I'm missing my MM project, so I think I will do a block of that first.

And since I haven't talked flowers for some time - here are some snaps

a new hibiscus I just planted

a rose I put in a year ago - it's a beauty - repeat flowering - very prolific -called Many Happy Returns.

Another new plant - a Delbard rose, gorgeous old fashioned shape and yellow colour.

And finally a book I bought. I love bulbs and this is a major reference on the subject - superb photos. It is written for the USA but I can deal with not having an Australian climate map in there - I have plenty already - so it shouldn't be a problem.

Still no phebe

Isn't it frustrating when you can't find just the right piece of material to finish off your applique? Well that's where I'm at. First off I tried to find a lovely print for the central urn - auditioned many but couldn't find one I liked. Eventually I gave up and used the same as Di did. I have already confessed to wholesale copying of Di's Phebe wherever possible, but I thought if I cold find a different urn it might not be so obvious. Now I'm looking for the top and bottom of the urn, and then I'm done, so it's not far off.

On Thursday I had to have two MRI's with a three hour delay in the middle. So since I had the day off I decided to head out to Needles and Pins in Warrandyte. Hadn't been there for years and was pleasantly surprised to see that they had a large stock of repro fabrics. Of course I had to get just a few pieces. Including this piece which will make beautiful backing for Ann Dagg.

I do have a little bit of Phebe to show you.

It's the second frame. Love that vine fabric. It's from the Pink and Chocolate range.

And I have done a little more on the GTASB -these two out of the last three blocks for March.

The one on the left looks smaller because the background has been pieced already.

Yesterday the family piled in the car and we headed off to Ballan for the fair and quilt show. They put on a good party for such a little town - we thoroughly enjoyed the event and the opportunity to get out of town. The quilt show was great - the organisers had designed around a circus theme - well done Lizzie and the team. So much creativity. I'm sure Lizzie will have many photos to show you. It was great to catch up with Lizzie there too.

Reviews:

Restaurant : Hellenic Republic. Those of you who live in Oz may know of George Kaloumbaris??? Well HR is one of his restaurants. We had a lovely night - a very busy, noisy place with great food. A little disappointed at the relatively limited selection though.

Movie: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Extremely faithful adaptation of the book. Main characters (Blomkvist and Salander) were excellently cast. For those of you who know the story, it is quite violent and the movie doesn't shy away from it - in fact it is very confronting, not for the squeamish.

Music: Had a hot date with my favourite toy boy ( ahem...my son) - went off to see the Branford Marsalis Quartet - what a knockout, the drummer was a maniac (I mean that in a good way). So if you're looking for a new Jazz CD, it's well worth a listen.

Still trying to catch up on my backlog of email and blog reading - I think this will be my Easter project. In the meantime, happy sewing.

Something exciting has happened!

I have a quilt almost finished - just the binding to go. It's exciting because it's the first time I have had anything machine quilted and I couldn't be more happy with it.

Aren't they just gorgeous. The machine quilt artist is Helen Hayes of Noah's quilting. Thank you so much Helen, I just adore it. Everywhere you look on this quilt you find another beautiful piece of work by Helen. And of course the pattern is also glorious. It's from Maggie Walker designs - called the Blue Collection.

I'll take a photo of the whole quilt when it's bound and hanging on my wall. So exciting - did I already say that?

On the GTASB project, I finished my last Feb block

and the first March block.

This one looks a bit empty to me - but that leaves plenty of space for someone to be artistic with quilting!

Three small blocks remain for March, which I will probably get done next week.

Still not finished Phebe (sigh) so I'm not posting a photo - but just have the urn to do so shouldn't be too long.

We had a lovely day today - SSS day - more on that over the next few days over at the SSS blog.

Well it's all about the Green tea

today. When this months package arrived and I realised I hadn't started last months or even finished the month 's before that I thought I should get a wriggle on. I have to admit, of all the sewing activities involved in patchwork, I like curved piecing the least, so these blocks got buried in the too hard basket. Glad they're finished, and they look quite pretty. What's your least favourite sewing activity?

Once they were out of the way I moved on to last months blocks.

one to go - finishing this is my job for tonight.

I have been using Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Circle templates for my circles and I just love them. I have a set of the small circles and I'm just about to buy the large ones as well. Give them a go!

And here is this months package .

There's lots of green in this one - I like it. But there seems to be a bit of curved piecing too - I think I'm going to applique those rings on instead.

Review: The third book in the Millenium trilogy is *dragging* really tedious, no action, oh well two out of three ain't bad!

Movie: Alice in Wonderland - I loved it and so did NOD - she saw it twice in a week. But beware - not the Alice story that you may be expecting, though the old story is wound through it. If you can't get to a 3D cinema - don't worry, I don't think it really adds much and the glasses are annoying.

Phebe: Just starting on the humans - but I don't think I'm going to show you any more progress until the centre is finished - just so you get a bit of impact factor.

That's it for me - I hope all is well where you are. I'm looking forward to work getting back to manageable chaos next week....and being able to spend some time catching up with your activities. I've noticed that there are a lot of spools out there, hmm I wonder what that's all about. Hope it's not contagious.

My bad Carma continues

I won't fill you in on all the gory details, the short version is whilst taking my car to prepare for trade in, it broke, big time. So I've been carless for nearly three weeks now and it's really starting to bug me. To make things worse, the car I was about to buy turned out to be not a good deal so I'm back to square minus one. Lucky I have my sewing group to look forward to - borrowed the MOTH's car to get to our group on Saturday - it broke on the way home. Now some would call that an unfortunate coincidence - the MOTH wasn't one of them. Luckily he managed to read every Peugot manual in existence and by the end of the weekend it appears to be working. I'm staying far away.

Now on to the real reason I'm here, before getting ready for work. I often think of old style battles before I go to work at this time of the year. You know the kind - when the troops woke up, had a cup of tea, and then started charging at an appointed time. It's a bit like that at work - every morning I need to brace for the coming onslaught. But again I digress.

Had a fabulous day at sewing Saturday - very rowdy - funny - creative - absolutely enjoyable in every way. It really lifted my spirits (until the car thing) thanks girls - you are all angels.

Phebe is coming along, but the little bits don't appear as much progress

I really love this quilt with a passion. My stash is very old and the oldest pieces were bought at Di's shop so I'm sticking to her fabric choices when I can. I know that's copying, but hey - why tamper with perfection. Besides I'm all decisioned out by the end of the day and I don't want to stuff it up. Darling girl even gave me some of her favourite pink fabric for the main flowers. It's a really stunning colour. Thanks Di, I'm ready to chop into it. Also the beautiful red in the central flower. I'm leaving the urn out for now and I'm on the hunt for just the right piece. It doesn't impede progress since I can work around it completely.

My other progress was finishing my CC&C top

I really like it and I'm no longer looking for the mistakes or the mismatched corners. Thought about basting it for quilting and then realised I didn't have any backing - der - it can wait.

Why are both my pictures crooked? I really am losing it.

Only time for quick posts right now

since work is so busy. I come home at night too exhausted to think let alone sew.

But I did have a minute today to get most of my CC&C quilt together.

I cheated a bit.....the rows aren't sewn together yet but you get the overall picture. I'm such a dill - I can't even figure out if my colour placement is OK. Even though I was careful I still think I got it wrong...Lori HELP!!! Or any of you who have also made this - does it look right to you?

Either way - too late now and I do like it. I hope to get it put together and basted over the next couple of weeks. I've already ordered the red binding (he he).

So good to have a few minutes

to drop by and say hi. Busy time at work getting all our new students (and returning ones) into classes, sorting out staffing issues and so on. By the time I hit home at night and catch up with the family it's just about bedtime.

Still I have some small progress to show. Hope these projects are not getting too ho hum for you.

GTASB - still trying to catch up with last months blocks. The second igloo block is done

and I have three flower blocks to do.

But of course, this months installment is here and I want to jump in.

Phebe is coming along too

Over the last 12 months or so my main project was DNQTTT - which did not have many different fabrics in it, and all of them were batik. As a consequence, I didn't buy too much repro fabric and missed some really beautiful collections. Of course with Phebe - I need quite a bit of variety of the repro kind so I have been replenishing my stocks with glee! Now my cupboards are overflowing and I have lots of options for Phebe. I even managed to get a piece of the lovely dirty teal that Di used for the grassy mound. Still haven't picked an urn though. I'll have to do some farcheological excavation (that's digging through old buried fabric - real word - true) to see if I can find a suitable piece.

I've also been tinkering with Lori's cheddar cheese and crackers - it's fun and the only machining I'm doing atm.

Everyone agrees that this should have red binding it seems - great - one decision made.

Haven't had much time to work on my baskets - but a package arrived from a dear friend last week.

You may not be able to see how many squares there are here - but I tell you - it looks like there is enough for a whole quilt. It was extremely generous of her to send me these and I'm keen to get going.

So that's me done. Because I've been so busy I haven't had time to leave many comments on your blogs or answer emails- but believe me - I've been stalking you and am always amazed and inspired by how much beautiful work you do. And I'm also amazed at how cold it gets in some parts of the US - and the snow! Makes for stunning pictures even if your toes are freezing!

Back to work

already. How did that happen? Just feels like yesterday that I was trying to organise Christmas. Does it feel like that way to you too, or have I lost all perspective?

Just a few things to show you today, finished one GTASB block for the month and started to pin another. Not going to get the other three done by months end but that's OK.

I have been concentrating on Phebe. Here she is

more details over here at SSS if you're interested. Need to take a little rest from Phebe while I'm waiting for some fabrics. And besides, I feel the need to think about the next MM block.

The other project that has been keeping me busy is Lori's cheddar cheese and crackers.

It's a little quilt - I have never made one before and I'm enjoying this one. I'm on to stage three now, so it won't take too long to finish the top. It's screaming "RED BINDING" to me. What do you think?

Now, summer movies and books. The Lovely Bones (movie) - hated everything about it -gruesome and sent all the wrong messages in mho. Sherlock Holmes - a ripping yarn, loved it. And besides, you could do a lot worse than eyeballing Robert Downie Jnr for 2 hours. My kids saw Fantastic Mr Fox and really liked it.

Reading the Millenium Trilogy (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc.) First one OK - second one terrific, just bought number 3.

Magazines: Quiltmania - love, love, love it.

Milestones are achieved by inches

or in this case - fractions of inches! Remember way back in November I showed you this picture? Well I finally finished it and now it looks like this.

I'm really happy with the outcome - but boy was I slow. Sometimes I don't mind that - it's the process that I like. But other times (like now when I'm in a "finish me" state of mind) I like fast results. Hope the next one doesn't take so long.

Mind you - if I ever worked on one thing (or at most five things) at a time I'm sure I would make more progress (I think there's another maths equation in there somewhere).

My main preoccupation the last few days has been starting Phebe. Here she is so far.

It's so much fun picking fabrics for this - I'm rediscovering fabrics I'd forgotten I had - but because the pieces are little - I'm not even making a dint in the stash. I'll write some more about Phebe over at the SSS soonish.

I've also been neglecting the GTASB BOM, so I thought I'd better get going for the month.

I have to admit, my mojo has been a bit distant over these couple of holiday weeks - everyone here is a bit lethargic due to the weather and the Christmas anticlimax. So I have been enjoying passively clicking around your blogs looking at all the wonderful work you are all doing and wishing I was snowed in too! I hope you all are getting some sewing in - especially you girls in the north trying to stay warm!

Finally - some family shots if you're interested. NOS turned 18 earlier this week. It was 43.7 that day so we decided to head to a restaurant near water. His party is yet to come (I can hardly wait). Here's birthday boy

The girls are here

and the group blog is up and off with a bang! The Secret Sewing Sisterhood is the group's name. Eleven of us in total so hopefully there will always be something interesting there to see. Merri and Meghan already have their first posts up. I'm sure I've said many times how lucky I am to have this group - well when you see what they're up to I'm sure you will agree.

Most of the things I've been up to are not postable - preparing a quilt to send to the quilters, setting up the blog, thinking.........nothing that you can photo. But I have finished my next MM block.

I like this one quite a bit. Also starting to prepare the background for Phebe. Here is my choice

I've also been trying to create a mosaic. Here's my first attempt. Not perfect - but OK.

Happy 2010

to all. I hope it's going to be a wonderful year for you. I'm looking forward to a year that's a little less stressful than 2009, a little less work and a lot more pleasure. We'll see if it happens. First thing I need to do is practice saying the word NO at work. Wish me luck!

I haven't got any grand plans for 2010 - I'm happy to continue with my current projects until the mood strikes me take on something new. Well actually, I am going to start Phebe but I'm counting this as a 2009 plan rather than 2010.

I managed to get my GTASB block finished last night.

Next months pack arrived during the week - it looks delish.

Have no more new work to show you - it's been too hot to sew much. But I will show you this quilt because 2010 is the year it gets on the wall. And it fits in with the posts Cathy and Joan have submitted recently. Hope you gals like my blue and white china collection.

I love it more than any I have made but it's been sitting in a cupboard waiting to be quilted for years! So I need to do it don't you agree? Here's a detail.

It started out as a BOM - but I ditched most of the fabrics they sent with it. Mainly kept the backgrounds and substituted the applique fabrics as I found them. It was fun to choose just the right pieces for each pot. Took a couple of years but I was in no hurry. Here's another bit.

And of course the new banner is another detail.

I'm sure I had more things to tell you - but my head is surprisingly empty. Must be all the R & R I'm getting over the Christmas - NY down period.

I've been thinking

quite a bit about what my NY's resolutions should be. Two words sprang to mind - FOCUSSED and EFFICIENT. I tend to spend too much time faffing around and not getting anything done. And I don't have time to waste. So the F word and the E word are going to be my 2010 words.

Before I tell you more let me show you the dessert I was cooking on Christmas Eve.

Rosewater meringue - good to eat, hard to cut. We had a very pleasant Christmas Day. How about you? I hope yours was wonderful too.

Now yesterday when I was thinking - staring at my Frida Kahlo calendar - my NOS sauntered in and reminded me that it was actually from 2008 not 2009 - quite right - I didn't get around to buying a new one so I reused it. Well the paintings are beautiful so why not? But I was thinking that I couldn't use it again for 2010 could I? So today the doorbell rang - guess who - yes the postie with a package (Merri stop laughing)......and it was truly unexpected. My friend Kathie sent me a wonderful calendar with a picture of her quilt on the front! Look - isn't it fabulous!

Thank you so much Kathie, you made my day - I'll be making a version of this for sure.

Now behind the calendar you can see a cabinet - this is part of the F and E mantra - I bought it from IKEA my sometimes favourite store. It now houses my on the go projects as well as my favourite books and magazines of the moment. These things usually live on the floor which means things get messy and out of control. Not very F or E.

Merry Christmas

Dessert cooking in the oven for tomorrow, presents starting to be wrapped, checking the list twice to make sure all is done in my little corner of Christmas Eve. Looking forward to tomorrow and seeing some of my family. And to having some time off over summer.

Thank you all for leaving so many wonderful comments and for extending your friendship to me through blogland. It has been great fun and so inspiring to peek into your worlds too.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with lots of laughter surrounded by your loved ones.

I have a couple of new quilt books that have been waiting for me to read them so I plan to do that over the next couple of weeks. I'll try and do a review at some point.

It's beinning to look a lot like Christmas

well on your blogs anyway........put the tree up yesterday but that's it. Went shopping on Sunday and bought almost all the required presents, just a few more to go. What a relief - I work right up until Christmas eve so not much time for organising/shopping or having pre-Christmas fun - but never fear - I'll be making up for it post Christmas. Are you having some fun? I hope so.

Just a few things to show you today. Number one: Mary Mannakee. Can't tell you how much I'm enjoying this. But I have a question. On this block I decided to sew a big stitch to quarter the block and mark the diagonals, since I wanted to get the placement right. After removing the machine basting - I have rather noticeable needle holes - any advice as to how to remove said holes? Won't be doing that again! Here is my finished block.

Number two: GTASB. This is the final block from last month - thought I'd finished it, but when I photoed it and went to put it away I realised that it needed to be set into a background square - der - what a thicko! So I'm still to do that, probably not worth another photo unless I'm running short of photos to show you. So just imagine this is set into a background square please.

Number three: Antique Wedding Sampler. I haven't finished the previous block but it's coming along. Just thought I'd give you a sneak peek at what's coming.

well now it looks like this

not bad huh? Not quite finished either. Scary part is the MOTH said the P word - yes - painting - OMG NOT THE P WORD! It quite possibly will not be finished in my lifetime - but I don't care - I can still sit on it right? Don't you love it - I do. And so do the kids and their friends who gave it a road test on the weekend.

Finally, on my shopping trip I sneaked in to Zetta Florence and got my stationary fix

These can make me enjoy filing bills - actually that's not quite true - but you get the idea.

I have not had much of a chance to read your posts the last couple of weeks, but I take a quick look at the photos which always make me happy. Hope to catch up shortly.

The secret's finally out

Well hello everyone. Managing to negotiate the Christmas rush without flipping a fuse? Well done! Last week I felt like I could spontaneously combust at any time - but things are a little less catastrophic this week. No progress photos to show you today although I do have some coming.

Over the past six months 10 women have been keeping a big secret! Hard to believe I know - but it's true the cat did not even make a meow let alone get out of the bag. On Saturday we had the Christmas party for our quilt group and let the secret out. Here's a photo

Unfortunately Clare could not be there due to family committments which was a shame for us since she had put in so much work.

The quilt is a reproduction of one in Annette Gero's book. I think it's called Frederika Josephson - sorry I don't have it here so I can't check. It is all hand pieced. We used fabrics from our stashes mainly - picking ones that we had bought over the years from Di's shop, so that will bring back fabulous memories for her. It was beautifully quilted by Helen who is a long time friend of Di's and does such a wonderful job.

So glad to have it safely delivered. It's hard work trying to remember whether one of our conversations was with our normal group or at a secret meeting.

This week sewing priority is dancing costumes. How many sequins do you need honestly!......and feathers................

I wish I had elastic days

you know - the kind you can pull from both ends so that they stretch to fit what you would like to do in a day. Nothing has moved here this week, including the ever thickening layers of dust and grime everywhere. Seems to increase in direct proportion to the number of hours DS (aka pigpen) spends at home.

Not that it hasn't been fun - just many family related activities which have kept me out of the house, NOD in dancing presentations, rehearsals and a Shakespeare play (she was sooooo funny as Stefano the drunk butler in The Tempest), NOS finishing his auditions (he was very happy with them) and NOD's birthday/party (gorgeous girlfriends). So no time to really think about sewing.

Oh yes, there is a major project underway in the backyard as well (remember I showed you a before and promised an after shot, coming soon).

In fact I have been writing this post for two days and haven't managed to finish it yet. Roll on the holidays!

So enough of my whining - I'm sure most of you are just as busy - are you?

I did manage to keep Sunday free so we could head up to Threadbears for Di's pattern launch. We had a fabulous day. We met at The Bold Garden for lunch (worth a trip for the lunch and the beautiful plants/garden art) - I think they had been "told" about us - so we had a back room all to ourselves (really noisy we were). It was great to meet Linda (Quilts in the Barn) and Bev there, albeit briefly. Hope she hasn't changed her mind about the exhibition now that she's heard us in action.

We arrived at Threadbears after lunch and the shop looked great as usual with a room set aside for Di to display her new quilt as well as some of her other recent ones. Gorgeous. And of course Corliss, Megan and Ruth were great to chat with - and who could forget Kurt (or is that Curt) either way he's a legend.

And just as we were heading out I spied Lizzie maestro of the CWB blog. Lizzie it was so great to meet you - you look just like your photo.

And I came back with a bag of goodies to start the new Ann quilt (above). Tossing up whether to start it or Phebe (detail below) first. Still haven't decided.

As testament to my busyness, this month I didn't finish the GTASB blocks before the next moth arrived. December's issue here.

I just knew those fingers would take me forever. The white part is freezer paper of course and will be removed to reveal the red underneath. I didn't need to tell you that did I.

OK that was my meager contribution for the week. And by the way - if you have emailed me and I haven't replied - a million apologies. I am far behind with my blog reading/responding and since the two email servers I use don't talk to each other, I have lost track of who I have and haven't answered. I will attempt to fix this shortly.

I do hope you are surviving the silly season and are finding some time to enjoy yourselves.

hope you are having a great week where ever you may be. Quiet in my house with NOS away at the beach and NOD very busy with dancing, singing and drama activities. Oh to be that young with that much energy!

Not much of note to show you today. I still feel a little sad that I didn't have a new Kaffe to show you so I pulled out a very simple top I made last year just to give you a colour hit. I love these old grey greens he does.

Should turn it into a quilt one day!

Beginnings of my third MM block - it uses only two fabrics - I love these colours.

And the first part of the GTASB month 6 is done - 7 of these. Only one more block to do - called Day Lilly.

I will be up at Threadbears in Castlemaine on Sunday arvo with some of the gang. Di will be launching her new pattern Ann's Legacy. It's a beautiful quilt - I'm sure she will have the quilt there too. If you're in the area it would be great to say hi. How will I know you? Don't know - I look like my photo only older. We'll be the noisy group - trust me we're noisy.

If you haven't been over to Barbara Brackman's blog yet - it is certainly worth a visit. So much interesting info there about antique textiles and repro quilts. And you might see a picture that you recognise.

Sunday after the Saturday before

Yesterday was a fabulous day - secret sewing group. It was the delightful Sue's turn to be the hostess - and what a hostess she is. About a year ago Sue and family moved from the city to the country so all of us except one made the trip up to her house - what a transformation she has performed in such a short space of time! It was a glorious day - she's a fantastic cook - I think I spent more time eating than sewing. Thanks Sue.

Actually the whole day was a bit more like a think tank than a sewing group. So many ideas and so much enthusiasm. I needed a cup of tea and a lie down by the time I got home.

Weird hot weather in Melbourne has not been conducive to sewing this week, but today is cool and we have had much rain overnight, so it feels a bit more like spring.

So what's been happening in my sewing room? Well I finished my MM block which was my goal for the week.

I really love this block - the colours are gorgeous and it is making me happy which is the whole reason I sew. Perfect.

Made one block of NOS's quilt to see how it goes. A bit fiddly turning squares into circles, but only 25 of them to do.

I think this will be a good quilt for a young man.

Next priority is to complete the GTASB blocks for the month. I usually have these finished quite early, but I just haven't had enough sewing time the last couple of weeks. Here they are so far.

More of the same coming up for this week. I have to say I am enjoying watching the Joseph's Coat quilts coming along. It looks like so much fun.....trying to resist the temptation, but it's not easy.

And just as an extra - for those of you who live in the Melbourne area. Di Ford is releasing her new pattern and will be in house at Threadbear next Sunday. The quilt is truly beautiful and is worth seeing up close trust me. Check out the Threadbear website for details.

I hope the weather isn't too extreme where ever you are. Especially if you're in a gondola on the Yarra.

Sorry to disappoint

all you Kaffeicianados out there. But I have resisted the call of those seductive temptresses Cathy and Janet, and not started a new Kaffe project. I did flick through a few Kaffe books and picked out some treasures, but then my desire was sated just by looking (cooking magazines often have this effect on my appetite too). I feel the need to finish things right now rather than start new things. So I remembered that a long time ago I started a quilt for Number One Son. We had just revamped his room from little boys room with puppy dog curtains in pastel shades, to big boys urban cool room. He was 14 after all! So I thought he needed a new quilt too. Well he still does (even though he's quite fond of his cowboy quilt). So I should finish it before he leaves home. Maybe.

The pattern is quite old and I don't have a photo - so it has taken me a bit of time to figure out what happens next and how it is supposed to look. Next step is to turn these blocks into circles. Progress report later.

The GTASB package arrived this week. First up I need to make seven of these little orange peel blocks.

They are all ready to cut and sew.

My next MM block has quite a bit of work in it. Here it is today

I think I'm enjoying this project more than any other right now. I love the green/red/cheddar combination.

And last but not least - the next AWS block I'm going to finish is this one

Wow, so much to do and so little time. Weather hasn't been great for sewing or anything else this week.

A big thank you to all of you who have been leaving comments. It is very reassuring to know that other people like what you do when you invest so much time and energy in it. It also gives me a great opportunity to find other sites and see what's happening outside my little world. A lazy Sunday

ahead following on from a lazy Saturday. Just the ticket! Yesterday the children were happily engaged in their various activities and I had nothing on the agenda apart from the usual driving them to and fro. So that left me with plenty of time to potter around and do a little bit (emphasis on the little) of housework. Too hot to spend much time in the garden although it needs some TLC. The grass is about a metre high since the lawn mower still hasn't been replaced after the shed burglary. So I had no choice but to spend time in my sewing hideaway. It's a tough life I know. Today the kids are both out of the house, so apart from shopping I am once again a free woman.

So here's what I've been up to. Finished a couple of AWS blocks

these are set on point so that rose in the middle will have its stem vertically aligned.

Started prepping the next MM block

I really love working with all this greenery. Each leaf here is different fabric.

The I cut some basket blocks.

Each of the backgrounds is from the stash my friend sent and the baskets are from my stash . I really like it so far and it gives me a pile of stitching ready to go when I need something quick and easy to grab.

Not sure what' s on the agenda for today. I usually only hand sew at night and machine sew in the day - but I don't have any machine projects on the go right now - how odd!

I hope you have something interesting or fun or relaxing to do for the weekend. Maybe I need to look for a machine project...I feel a Kaffe moment looming..........

A small Ta-dah moment

Good afternoon to all and I hope you are having a fabulous day. I'm very excited and ready to say "Ta-dah" because the first Mary Mannakee block is finished!

I'm very happy with the way it looks. The red, green and yellow colour combo is lovely. Deciding still on which block to tackle next. If you would like to see more blocks from this quilt, visit Kathie and Janet. Both of these very talented quilters have been given a mention on Barbara Brackman's blog! How cool is that - and very well deserved. The Civil War Bride Quilt was also mentioned on BB's blog - well done to Lizzie and all who are contributing such beautiful work and of course to Corliss for reproducing the pattern and her stunning version of this quilt.

Still working on my antique wedding sampler block, and have picked this one

to finish next. I love it because it's a seventeen pointed star - and you don't see too many of those now do you?

I thought I would show you this picture

which is a lovely folder that I bought at Zetta Florence the other day when I was buying paper for the box. Isn't it just too PRETTY.

And last but not least, an extremely generous friend asked me if I was going to make a basket quilt (from Blackbird designs). When I said yes, she said she would send me some squares of fabric that she had been using. Have a look at all these gorgeous fabrics

it seems like she's sent me enough to make the whole quilt! I was gob-smacked! Thank you so much - I'm now itching to start this quilt. Don't worry - starting is good for the soul and I'm being very good to mine!

A quick update

on the Antique wedding quilt. Pulled out this block

to work on next. As you can see it's almost there but the leaves in the corners and the star in the middle still need to be stitched. I think there is also a bit of broderie perse on this one too. That may have to wait until the end unless I can find some suitable fabric to use in my stash.

If you haven't seen Alma Allen (Blackbird designs) blog yet - take a trip over (link on the sidebar). She has some beautiful things there and does great tutorials on making all sorts of handcrafted pieces. Last week she made a fabric covered box - hers was very old fashioned, I had to try one but mine is colour infused!

Kaffe on the outside and some beautiful paper I bought from Zeta Florence (Brunswick Street, Fitzroy) on the inside.

I'd had my eye on their beautiful stationary for some time and was just waiting for an excuse to buy some. If you like stationary it is heaven there.

This one was a trial and I learned a couple of things on the way. A tip - if you are going to try - pick a smaller box than mine. It is about 9 inches tall (I didn't realise until later that Alma's was only 3). The technique is the same, but the larger pieces are harder to manipulate. So I have a few bubbles and crinkles. All up it probably took an hour and a half - but it would be much quicker with a smaller box.

Jean has also made a beautiful box - have a look at Linen and Raspberry (over on the sidebar).

New project revealed

So - are you waiting to find out what the new project is? You are? Sorry for keeping you waiting so long. The man of the house has been OS so the motherhood duties have increased and the work / life balance has been - well- unbalanced. So without further teasing go and have a look here.

Yes another of those projects from an old Primarily Patchwork pattern has been removed from its protective wrapping (aka plastic bag) ready to be completed. The quilt is based on the Charlotte Gillingham quilt but the PP version is not T- shaped. It is square with about 25 beautiful blocks set on point with a sashing between and some Broderie Perse. It is a combination of appliqued and pieced blocks. Here is one of the pieced blocks that I have already done.

I'm hoping to get it ready for the exhibition next year - but I have to say I thought I had completed quite a bit more of it than I have, so there is much work to do. It's great fun rummaging through these old fabrics that I have used for it. They are mostly Civil War but have a few old fashioned florals (Robyn Pandolph early style) thrown in - they were all the rage at that time.

I have spent most of my available sewing time this week on my first MM block. Here she is so far

it is fun to stitch. The background fabric (moda bella) is fraying quite a bit so I may have to overlock the edges. I usually cut my blocks 1/2 inch bigger than necessary so when I cut them to size, the overlocking will disappear.

I have also done a tiny bit on my Beatrix sampler. I made an error placing the corner motif so that by the time I got to the edge I was a stitch out. Now I don't get really uptight about these things, but this was BUGGING me - so I pulled it all out and started again. What's wrong with that? Wouldn't you do it too? So I only got to here this month

when really I wanted to get right across the top. Oh well..such is life.

The other cool thing is that MOTH came home from Belgium with gifts. Yes a new fancy camera for me - it's very nice but I need to spend some time figuring out how it works. So my DD is very happy because I have been using hers and she was SICK OF IT. She would be happier if we swapped cameras - but that ain't gonna happen - sorry sweet P.

Number one son is starting his written VCE exams tomorrow. Not showing too many signs of stress yet - but not showing too many signs of hard work either. He's a pretty chill dude. First actual exam was last Sunday - music performance, he was very pleased with the way it went so all is well. Roll on December 4 - his last audition and also sweet P's birthday - how big will that party be!

A rare moment of peace

I won't go into the tedious details of why the last couple of weeks have been NUTS, but trust me, they have. So in my rare moment of peace today, right now, I thought I would give you a quick snapshot of my progress. I am on track for what I wanted to do this week - so feeling good.

First my last GTASB block for this month is done.

I think this one is pretty. Takes a bit of time though - mine are all hand pieced, and I'm slow.

And second I have my MM Block 1 partially pinned up - enough so you can see what's going on. I'm very happy with it - and a little bit excited - hence the need for the post. Do you like it? Please say yes or my bubble will burst.

amazing what you put at the back of the cupboard and forget about isn't it? I woke up early one morning a couple of weeks ago thinking - didn't I buy some red/yellow/green fabrics last year?
What a dope! But lucky - they are perfect for this quilt.

The other thing I have bouncing around in my head is the Rouenneries fabrics . I just LOVE them - but couldn't figure out what I would do with them. If you haven't seen them, check them out here. Aren't they just tres chic? But then I remembered this pattern from Quiltmania

Might be good.....what do you think? I know it's upside down - just ignore it.

This was the week that was.

Good morning on this bright and sunny Sunday. If you live in Melbourne, I hope the rain has given you an extra excuse to stay indoors and get some sewing done! It's been so heavy here that at one point I thought about building an Ark. I'm quite happy for it now to rain only between the hours of 6pm and 7am.

Yesterday was our sewing meeting - always eagerly anticipated and this was no exception. My turn to host it this time - always makes me a little stressed. We had lots to show and tell (sorry no photos - we don't usually do photos) and didn't get to start sewing until getting on for 12 (we start at 10). After eating chocolate and raspberry brownies (not my best cooking effort - sorry girls) getting a caffeine hit and reviewing our latest works, we managed to get some sewing done. Lots of laughs and good stories. Brilliant!

I completed the last of the PA applique blocks this week. Here it is

and the last of those that I completed earlier.

I'm very happy with the way it's turning out. I have had many inquiries about this pattern and have been passing them all along to Di who is currently in the USA - but I hope she will make the pattern available again soon. In the meantime here is how the whole thing should look.

Not a great photo - it's the only one I have, clipped from an old magazine ad. I am waiting on the fabric to come in for the background triangles, they have some simple applique on them which shouldn't take too long. The other thing I need to do is the outside border of little triangles. This will be a weekend job. I usually only machine sew in the day and hand sew at night. So that means I need another project for the evenings. I have one - but you're going to have to wait until next time to see it.

Oh OK ....here's a sneak peek

On the agenda for this week I have the last of the GTASB blocks for this month. It is half cut out so I can start work on that. I would also like to start my first MM block this week. I have the fabrics chosen so I just need to draw the template. And I also need to put some time in on my BP cross stitch. That should keep me busy for this week since I have a few other commitments as well.

For those of you thinking about the CWB here is the background fabric which arrived this week. I'm very happy with it. It is a lovely colour and subtle tone on tone print.

Value adding

or turning credit card debt into beautiful works of craft. Seems like ages since I was here, hope you have all been well and happy. I have been chipping away at a few projects but not making enough progress to report on really. I am trying to keep up to date with the GTASB BOM, because I would really like to have it finished at the end of the program. When this months came I thought it looked like quite a bit of sewing and I was right, although it is quite easy.

The first block is a lovely hexagon panel

I just pieced mine, but Lurline is english paper piecing which looks like fun.

The other two blocks are called tulip blocks. I have finished one and will do the other next week.

My main preoccupation though is appliqueing the setting triangles for the PA quilt. These all look the same - so not much to show. Nearly finished and then I can get on to the last of the blocks.

Anyone who is doing the CWB will know that there are many leaves on block 2. Well yes there are and I find trying to get a balance between variation in the colours and not making it look like a "random collection of every green fabric I have" quite difficult. I haven't quite finished but here it is so far.

I will post on the CWB blog when it is done - hopefully tomorrow. It does look like a jumble right now, but I think it will be OK when stitched.

The postperson continues to beat a path to my door (so exciting). Since I last saw you, he brought the background for my Mary Mannakee quilt. I'm really going to have fun with this. Have a look at Kathie's and Janet's versions for some inspiration. This is what I'm thinking for block 1.

These lovely things also came. The fabric I bought for my stash since Hancock's were having such a great sale. The book is one that Kathie recommended and it looks great. Can't wait to start reading that one. The yarn is for a crocheted scarf made of granny squares. The colours are dusty and beautiful, but I think it can go away until next winter. Can't imagine that I will need a woolly scarf for awhile. It came from a lovely store in Wangaratta called Sackville & Lane. They sell beautiful yarn and some patchwork fabrics and sewing things. Well worth a visit if you are up that way.

I assure you - this is rather more than usual shopping activity for me. And yes there is more on the way (but don't tell anybody).

My lovely friend also sent me these beautiful green fabrics.

How lucky am I? My MM quilt is going to be filled with these lovely fabrics.

So that's me done. Lots to do for the coming week and I have secret sewing here next Saturday. I'm really looking forward to that one.

Ding Dong!......better than Avon

Yes the postman is such a frequent visitor that the neighbours are starting to worry. Here's me up to my ankles in good gear. Note the very clean floor from my recent spring cleaning.

So you need a closer look? First up is GTASB month 5.

Looks like a fair bit of sewing in there this month. Lurline photographed this beautifully along with a picture of the whole quilt. Why tamper with perfection? Check out her shots here. Even though her fabrics are the same I bet we end up with blocks that are quite different.

A couple of books. Kaffe's latest - I love everything that man does even if I never make anything (which of course I will) it is pure pleasure to look.

The other book is quite old and I have wanted it for a long time. Haven't had a chance to look inside yet but I can't wait.

These fabrics are called 19th century reds. The colour is washed out - but trust me it is really red.

They are lovely - I'm collecting for MM. And these reds are Quaker quilts with a couple of other bits I had to have.

The reds in the Quaker group have a bit more zing than the 19th C but they go beautifully together.

Still haven't done much sewing - work, kids, bit of a social life, but I thought I would show you some more flowers just to show the doubting Tomas's out there that I have more than one.

California poppies that grew from seed I sprinkled at the wrong time of the year - aren't they a gorgeous gold?

We had a lot of irises with plenty of leaves but no flowers. So I dug them all out and replanted. This one has flowered (obviously). I hope some of the others do too.

Isn't this dutch iris a pretty one? See where my love of green and purple comes from?

Oh and the long grass is courtesy of the genius who stole our lawn mower a few weeks back - honestly!

So proud of my flowers, I'm really not a gardener. So a question for those who are.....when Dutch Iris have finished blooming should I chop off the dead flowers? Any advice appreciated. Uh Oh.......doorbell..I wonder who that could be?

Slow and steady

What a glorious morning it is here after days of unseasonally cold and wet weather in Melbourne. Of course if you live in Melbourne, you welcome the rain because it's not something we have very often. The garden is certainly happier for it.

School holidays here so I am dividing my time between working and home and keeping up with what the DD and DS are up to. So not much stitching of any sort really. I did however spend most of a rainy Sunday in my room cleaning....well I couldn't put a foot anywhere without stepping on something, so it had to be done.

Being the end of the month, I spent a couple of nights working on my BP sampler, so I had some progress to report on the SAL blog. Here it is - heading into the home stretch.

Still working on the PA quilt, but I'm sewing the setting triangles, they are repetitive so you don't want to see them again. But here are the next two blocks. The red and green one is my favourite.

I have also put a few more crochet squares together ( but haven't been back to the shop to get the dark teal for the border) and cut out the templates for CWB Block 2. So small progress but not for showing. But beware - there may be an avalanche coming.

Lost in blog space

Now here's a mathematical equation that everyone can understand - provided it's in context. It's called Conservation of Energy. It says that total amount of energy in a closed system remains constant. Here goes

more time spent blogging = less time spent sewing

See - easy! Of course it's not just how much time you spend writing your own blog, you have to catch up with your blog buddies that you have on the sidebar, then when you're visiting them you see some pictures on their sidebar and before you know it, hours have passed, you've visited every country on the planet, and the big fat G & T that you sat down with has long since been emptied (sometimes more than once). How much sewing have you done - haha - only in your mind. And now that's also filled with 75 new projects that you have to start and here's another application of conservation of energy (well almost)

exactly - visited too many fabric vendors and now your house is going to be like Privet drive when the owl post arrives (if you haven't read Harry Potter just ignore that last bit!)

After last weeks long post I decided I should try and post in more bite sized chunks. The mailperson has already been busy

This is my backing for DNQTTT. It is a little pinker than I expected it to be - I was hoping for a red but it's so hard to tell on the internet. It will do - it's on the back and it will be on the wall right!

Next

This is the next in the Blackbird Loose feathers series. I do an autoship with Shakespeare's Peddler. Theresa is great if you're after cross stitch supplies. There are also a couple of the Blackbird stocking charts in there. The colours of these threads are just beautiful.

Last this

The reds are for the MM quilt. They are Jo Morton crimson and clover, the other is Morris workshop - really beautiful, which will be the background for a version of the Roebuck quilt that I will be making.

Now for my little bit of stitching. I finished this piece for the PA quilt.

It's great having some pieces ready to go - it makes the whole putting together task so fast with so little effort.

Exciting News!

Well I'm back. I think the new blog will definitely be ready to go shortly. Too much for me to put in my humble little blog.

So the first piece of exciting news is that Di is rereleasing a beautiful pattern called "Homage to Sallie Ann"

It really is the most beautiful quilt. The version above was made by Merri. The patterns are available from Threadbear.

But even more exciting (well for me and hopefully for some of you) is that while I was writing the last post, Di called me to tell me that our group had been invited to be the next exhibitors at "Quilts in the Barn". Well I think we each squealed down the phone when Di rang us - she probably is a little bit deaf tonight.

How am I going to turn my UFO's into exhibit pieces? A few late nights ahead I think.

The exhibition is planned for October 2010 so we have some time. Wow...so excited. I have never shown my work before. Won't that be fun?

Such a perfect day

Well weekend actually. The weather here in Melbourne is glorious. Warm and bright with not too much of the Spring wind. Time for a little bit of gardening this afternoon......very satisfying to see some green before the summer hits and scorches everything in sight.

The weekend has been perfect because every family member has been off happily doing their own thing. Yesterday my thing was Secret Sewing.....my favourite day of the month. For some reason I was more than usually excited to see the girls yesterday - maybe because I wanted to tell them about my blog. And it seems that they were all the same. It was a great day - plenty of conversation (sometimes many at once) lots of laughter, delicious food, and of course many projects to show, comment on, offer advice and plan. I think one of us actually sewed something - but of course this is not strictly necessary. Here's a photo of (most of) the gang

They are such a creative group of women - just the perfect way to spend a day. I have suggested the idea of starting a group blog, so they could all show you their own projects. I think they quite like the idea, so I'll let you know if it happens.

Chris was the hostess for the day - thank you Chris, it was lovely. My turn next month - what will I cook? what will I wear? ...so many decisions AARGH!

I snapped a couple of photos of things in progress

Here is Ann (right) with Merri. Ann is just starting the DNQTTT quilt which you can see. She wins the achievement award for yesterday because by the time we had ended for the day Ann had cut all the pieces for the centre and there are quite a few. This version is going to have a real civil war feel about it I think.

it's another stunner. The group decided they would try and make a version of a Kim McLean quilt called Turkish Tiles based on a photo from QNM. Well by the time Meghan redesigned and drew the centre panel and Di redesigned the outside blocks - I'm not sure how much of the original is left. So maybe it needs a new name - perhaps Homage to Turkish Tiles! I'm not making this one - I wanted to finish some others, but boy am I sorry now! Oh well add it to the to do list.

Enough of the girls - they need their own blog don't they?

My sewing is not very focused right now. I am waiting for my CWB background to come - but while waiting I thought I would start to design the blocks. Here is number 1

placement is a little on the wonky side, but hey - it's only pinned. I am using a combination of a starter pack that I bought at Threadbear and pieces from my stash. If you are thinking of making this quilt I highly recommend the starter pack.

I have also finished the last two blocks of GTASB for the month.

Very enjoyable project if you like simple hand piecing.

What else - oh yes - PA progress. I have started piecing together the next round of applique blocks

I wanted to put this all together but the brown fabric in the background is the one I'm short of so I'll wait until my new lot comes in. So much waiting and I'm Sooooooo impatient. Maybe someone's trying to tell me something. The colours are much more rich in real life.

as you can see I haven't finished it yet. But it's well on the way. Did I tell you before that I'm really enjoying this one? Yes, No? Well I am.

I think that's it for the week. Except to say that I've made so many great contacts through this blog - it has been really fabulous to be able to connect with so many people who enjoy the creative process of "craft" in its various forms. But one special person has been really encouraging and enthusing me - Kathie - you know who you are! Look what she sent me

I'm so excited and thankful. And yes - ordered the background and I'm WAITING for it. Patience is a virtue and no one has ever called me virtuous!

Two things to finish with. One - stay tuned for some very exciting news (actually it's exciting for me and hopefully it will be for you also). I thought it deserved it's own post and besides I have to cook dinner now.

Two - I thought I would indulge myself and show you the two most beautiful things I've made

aren't they beautiful - really - it's not just me is it? The big one is in VCE (last year of high school) and was off to his formal. The little one is in year 8 and was off to a play with her friends - no adults required thanks! They haven't really got red eyes - I just need a little photo practice.

Serendipity and Zippety Do-dah

In my haste to get my post up last Sunday I overlooked a few things. Firstly, a big Thank You to Janet (Quiltsalot) and Kathie (Inspired by antique quilts) for helping me set up my blog and mentioning me on their blogs. If you haven't seen their work - have a look over on the side bar for the links. Both blogs are well worth a visit.

Second, if you click on Flickr in the sidebar it will take you to see the previous Green Tea blocks that I have completed. There is a group for this BOM, but I'm not sure you will be able to get in and see other people's photos unless you are a member.

Thirdly, Merri was very pleased with your lovely comments on her quilt. She says her head is not swollen (even a little bit)! You should see what she's working on now! I'll ask her for some photos in due course.

It has been one of "those" weeks for me. School council meeting, parent teacher interviews and movie group (saw the Soloist - excellent movie) in the evenings as well as having a nasty virus means production has been low. So

.....................as I said - one of "those" weeks. Luckily this is a new blog and I have plenty of stuff in the cupboard that I can drag out for a rainy day.

I did manage to get thise done for the GTASB BOM

Very simple drunkard's path blocks. Two more blocks still to do for this month on that one.

I also started to cut out for the CWB quilt. I don't have the background yet so I am pinning the shapes to felt, ready to stitch.

Not much done, but a start is better than nothing.

I have also put a bit more work in on the PA quilt

There is some simple applique to do on the setting squares which I will try and do this week. As I was looking at this and trying to remember how it all went together, I realised that the other reason I put this quilt down, was that I was short on one of the background fabrics. Of course I couldn't get any more at the time and so it all became a bit too hard. BUT - guess what? I got a Hancock's catalogue in the mail on Friday. Marcus brothers is reprinting some old Judie Rothermel Civil War fabrics - and yes - one of them is the background. How's that for coincidence - this has been sitting in my cupboard for about 10 years!

Green Tea

If you have a Dad in your life, I hope you are having a lovely day. I have secreted myself away from Father's Day so that I can upload some pictures...but I can't be long!

First picture today is of my next Green tea and sweet beans block. I am really enjoying this BOM. It is not the sort of fabric I normally buy in large amounts, so the BOM is a good way to make a lovely quilt without the leftovers. There are another four blocks for this month. The others are pieced rather than appliqued.

I have also made a little more progress on the Pennsylvania quilt. Keep in mind that most of these blocks have been made some time ago and I am just sewing together or doing minor things. For these pieces I am appliqeing the leaves on the border. I have nearly finished all four borders and then I can make up the centre square.

I am really enjoying working on this again. And I now recall the reason I stopped. There was a piece of material that started to disintegrate. Not sure if the fabric was faulty or not - actually I think I may have scorched it in my quest for pressing perfection (which I have now grown out of). But parts of it started to fall to pieces and I couldn't go on! Part of my task now is to go over the finished pieces very carefully and remove damaged parts then replace them. Not fun since I hate redoing things.

I have also been crocheting squres - 66 in all - although some don't have their blue borders as I have run out of that colour. I need 90 to make the quilt so not far to go!

And last but not least for today. As I said in my profile, I have a neglected garden. But about 18 months ago I started to put in some work because I would really love to have a pretty space out back. So I couldn't resist showing you the first Dutch Iris I have ever grown. Quite proud I am!

I've got mail!

Don't you just love it when the postie comes bearing large envelopes? It's like getting fantastic presents - exactly what you wanted - and if the mail is slow you may have even forgotten that you actually paid for them! Heaven. Well I got 2 this week

what's in them?

Number 1 is the Civil War Bride pattern - beautifully produced and arrived within a day of ordering - thanks Corliss, I love it. The background fabric is on backorder, so I'm going to start designing my blocks and I should have a few ready to go when the fabric arrives.

Number 2 is the Green tea and Sweet Beans BOM (month 4) from Amitie. I am loving this one. I saw the quilt at the Stitches and Craft show early this year and it just shouted SPRING. As you will see, my taste in quilts is quite eclectic. I adore the old traditionals, but the bright cheerful colours of quilts like this one just make me happy. And of course I have loved Kaffe since he started knitting and needlepoint all those years ago.

I have had a couple of requests to show photos of Merri's DNQTTT quilt so here are a couple. If you click on Flickr on the side bar you will see some more shots, and also my progress on Green tea and sweet beans.

Isn't it just beautiful? I asked Merri to include a photo of herself but she chickened out. Maybe next time.

Pennsylvania and Beatrix

Something (almost) finished gives me a feeling of achievement. I have to admit that I am very good at starting but not good at finishing. I try to set myself goals - finish X before you start Y - works sometimes but not always.

But I have finished the top of the Bullseye quilt - which is now ready to go to the quilter. I really like the idea of hand quilting, and have completed a couple of quilts, but time is limited and if I have the choice between making a new piece or quilting an old one - I will always choose the former. And also, my 13 year old DD is very impatient and wants it NOW! No photo of it today - sorry. I'll have to get the ladder out to do it and I wasn't up for it today.

I have also ordered 9.5 yards (yes that's right 9.5 yards) of red batik for the back of DNQTTQ. It's so big I need three drops - what should I do with the leftovers?

I joined the Civil War Bride group this week (hi Lizzie and crew). Haven't posted there yet though. I bought the starter pack at the last quilt show but that's all. I am waiting on the pattern and backing to come and then I'll be off and running. You can find the blog here. The completed blocks contributed so far are really beautiful. Check it out!

So while I'm waiting for that to get going, I have pulled out an old unfinished project to work on. I have appliqued most of the blocks but still have a bit of work to do. I just need to remember where I was up to. Here are some photos of the centre.

The quilt was originally called Pennsylvania applique, but later changed name to Poppies. I started it in a class at Primarily Patchwork many years ago, but stopped working on it when the class finished.

And also, let me show you this

It's the reason I started to be interested in blogs. It is Beatrix Potter's Quaker. I joined the SAL in December 2008 - the idea was that we started stitching on Jan 1 2009 and I guess to finish by the end of the year. Not sure I'll quite get there, but I'll get close. You can see some other versions here. They are very pretty.

Tradition with a Twist

About a year and a half ago, I found this picture of a beautiful old quilt and knew I had to make it.

I love red and green quilts and I thought this one wold be achievable in my lifetime. I took the photo along to my quilt group and they were all eager to join in the fun. One of the girls wasn't at the meeting, but we told her it was a simple applique piece - not too hard because the pieces were large. When she finally saw the picture she said - "I don't think Deb's quite telling the truth". Hence the quilt became known (affectionately) as the "Deb's not quite telling the truth quilt". The problem now was - how do I draw it? I have trouble with straight lines let alone curves! But with the help of the trusty photocopier and a plan printer I have access to at work - I managed to reproduce a pattern the same size as the finished quilt.

It's a large quilt - 90 x 104 inches. Merri (who named the quilt) was the first to finish. She has done hers in repro fabrics - red and brown and green - it just came back from the machine quilter and looks stunning. The other girls are in various stages of completion, working on it at the same time as some other projects, some decided not to start it just yet. I have just finished my top. We debated over whether or not to put the vine around the central medallion. I was going to and had it pinned on, but when I saw Merri's (which does not have the vine) I took it off because the quilter had done some beautiful designs in the space.

OK - so I'm going to show you the central medallion of mine. I have no idea how to photograph the whole thing - but I'll try to do it when it's quilted.

Hmmmmm....did you think it would be red and green on white? Well so did I! But when I was thinking about it I found this great background fabric (it's not photographing well - it's a grey/chocolate colour). At the same time, I found a picture of a Brazillian appliqued sofa which was plain colours on a plain background. Very graphic and stunning. So I thought I would try it. The fabrics I have used for applique are batiks and fossil ferns. I'm in two minds about the result. I really like the quilt I've made, but now I'm still hankering for a traditional red and green. The big decision now is what will I do for the backing? I'm thinking a red batik. Can't wait to send it off to the quilter!

Yippee - I have followers! I'm so excited because I was a bit worried I was talking to myself, alone in the whole world. Thanks so much to Kathie for your tips. And to Jean and Lizzie and Kim for coming over to read my blog. You can find links to all their beautiful blogs over on the sidebar.

I have had a bit of a lazy week this week. Busy work days mean when I get home I am a bit floppy and look for easy things to do. So the granny squares have had my attention. Easy on the brain and the eyesight. I would say they have me hooked (but that would be a terrible pun) so I won't.

Here is the ever growing pile.......

Don't those ends look daunting? Sewing them in is my least favourite job.

The highlight of the week was meeting with my quilting gang yesterday. They are such great fun and I always come home with my mood enhanced - that may also have something to do with the fabulous food we always devour at these meetings.

I am between quilting projects right now - but I promise there will be lots of pictures coming.

One quilt I have nearly finished is for my daughter (my gang hasn't seen it yet since it is all machine sewn and for the gang meetings we mainly take handwork). Last year we renovated her room. Her chosen colour scheme, red and white, screamed out for a new quilt. It's nearly done - have a look.....

It only needs to be set into a background square. Won't have time to do that today though - maybe next week. I have used mainly Sturbridge scarlets and a pattern called Indiana rising sun by Michelle Yeo. You can find here patterns here.

Colour Palette

Well I did manage to get over to my wool shop and buy the extra colours I needed for my blanket.

The colours look fabulous together. Very bright and cheerful. I made some more granny squares last night

These little guys are quite addictive.

While I was in town yesterday I found a new wool/craft shop. It's a big open space upstairs at Australia on Collins - they run classes and drop in groups and have their own brand of Australian wool which is quite beautiful. They also have some Patons, Cleckheaton, Noro, Rowan. Well worth a visit. It's called Morris and Sons.

On an unrelated matter, I'm throwing in this picture of a quilt block

I am lucky enough to belong to the most fabulous quilt group. You'll be hearing much more about these girls. Di suggested we make a quilt to give to one of the bush fire victims. We have each made 2 of these blocks. My first has already gone so I thought I'd snap this one before it goes too.

First post..........the post that hurts the most!

Any of you who are familiar with The Mighty Boosh will recognise the title. Although I am not sending my "new moves" through the post - it is still apt.

I have been procrastinating about whether or not to start a blog - and then wondering how I want it to look, for over six months now. Finally I've decided it's time. I get so much pleasure and inspiration from other blogs I decided it's time to give something back. I hope that you will get some inspiration from my stuff at some point in time.

I won't promise to be a regular - daily - blogger, but if I can show you something once a week - that will do.

So where to start? I have so many projects on the go it would take forever to show you. So I will start with a project I began last night. A granny square blanket. It has been forever since I crocheted but I am really enjoying it. There is a lot of wonderful crochet around right now. My inspiration is Lucy at Attic 24. You can find her fabulous blog here.

So without further ado.........

I am not the best photographer - and the colours here aren't true. The blue edge is actually a dark teal. I'll need to work on that. I'm using Heirloom 8 ply easycare which is very easy to work with and quite inexpensive. It is a little stiff and I've already rubbed a whole on my finger. I'm adding some more colours today so I will show you the whole colour palette next week.
